Eskişehir has hosted many poets and bards, and is a city that hosts valuable memories that have lasting traces. Cemal Süreya wrote many of his poems in his house on Zambak Street in the Vişnelik Neighborhood while he was working as an intern at the Eskişehir Tax Office. One of these poems, I Saw Women Along the Porsuk River, reflects the poet's memories of Eskişehir. Today, there is a plaque bearing his name in the apartment where that house is located, and one of his poems is on the wall. Eskişehir was also home to Âşık Veysel, who taught at the Çifteler Village Institute. This great bard, who emerged from the heart of Anatolia and touched hearts with his saz and words, played and sang the poem Toprak on these lands, and left a deep legacy about life with the lines "My loyal lover is black soil." Thanks to valuable artists such as Cemal Süreya and Âşık Veysel, Eskişehir has become a cultural capital that is deeply imprinted with the deep traces of literature and poetry, and whose roots extend far into the past.
